Now, over 60 people in the project have gathered in Stavanger to share knowledge and achieve good cooperation across the industry. Together, they will change the way we build roads today.

One of the main objectives of the project is to develop new Norwegian more sustainable technology and expertise with great export potential, which contributes to Nye Veier reaching the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the construction phase of road projects by 50% by 2030.

Head of Technology and Science in New Roads, Anne Stine Johnson, is optimistic about what the Green Platform project can achieve.

“In New Roads, the project is getting a lot of attention. Together, we will be able to change our industry through a sustainable value chain and the use of materials in road construction,” Johnson says.

The ambition is to establish an effective innovation system, the “European Road” for new Norwegian technologies, in which we increase the pace of transition to green and innovative solutions and methods by removing the barriers that currently stop their industrialization.

“We will change the way we work and devise new ways to build roads,” says Helen Roth, project manager and general manager of VIA.

Good collaboration across the industry is essential to bring about change, Roth stresses.

Sustainable value chain and material use in road construction will consist of a minimum of ten full-scale pilots. Working together across the entire value chain is essential and key to success.

An important part of the project is to verify through research whether the different pilot projects are actually more sustainable or not compared to the current situation. In addition, a proposal should be drawn up on how to manage the resources of road construction in a circular manner.

“In this project, we want to transform the way we build roads. We're going to do that through looking at new construction techniques, using new materials and innovative design. The aim of the project is to see if we can save 50% of the current CO! 2 emissions in the construction of roads, and we believe that is quite possible!
Says Reyn Joseph O'Born, participant in the project and associate professor at the University of Agder.

The Green Platform is funded by the Ministry of Industry and Fisheries, and is awarded jointly by the Swedish Research Council, Innovation Norway and Siva.
The Green Platform will accelerate the green transition in the business sector by supporting projects that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 on the path to a low-emission society in 2050.
